Mr. Andrew W. Dahl, Sc.D. – Chairman
Andrew W. Dahl, Sc.D., has been a director of the company since September 1999. Since May 2007, Dr. Dahl has served as Chief Innovation Executive of Fairview Health Services, a $2.5 Billion non-profit health organization, which is a clinical arm of the University of Minnesota. From March 2005 to March 2007, Dr. Dahl served as the Vice President of Consumer Driven Health and Human Resources of Alegent Health, a non-profit, multi-hospital and health system headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska. He served as President and CEO of Evolution Health, LLC, from July 2000 through February 2005. From July 1994 through December 1999, Dr. Dahl served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of HealthNet, Inc. From July 1990 through March 1994, Dr. Dahl served as President and Chief Executive Officer of IVF America, Inc. (now known as IntegraMed), where he was instrumental in taking the corporation public. Dr. Dahl also served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of St. John Health and Hospital Corporation in Detroit, a university-affiliated medical center, and was Vice President for Development of the Hospital Corporation of America, Management Company. Dr. Dahl received his Sc.D. from The Johns Hopkins University and a M.P.A. from Cornell University. Dr. Dahl is also a fellow in the American College of Health Care Executives.
Ms. Adele Sommerfeld, MBA, M.Sc. – Director, Chief Executive Officer
Ms. Sommerfeld possesses a breadth of experience within the biotechnology industry, spanning over 25 years. She brings significant experience across functional areas including biotechnology equity financing transactions, corporate strategy, strategic partnering, and business development. She started her biotech career by launching a bio-diagnostic company, Diagnostics Inc. for the now, Maxxaim Analytics and later facilitating its acquisition by EDITEK, Inc. a US public company after which she and continued as V.P. Business Development. Ms. Sommerfeld later joined the Business Development Bank of Canada as Director of Venture Capital- Life Sciences. Since, Ms. Sommerfeld has taken on both start-up operational roles as CEO and CFO for start-up biotechs including Tolerotech Inc, an RNAi/gene silencing company and Catalyst Medical Technologies, Inc. She has held corporate finance roles for boutique advisory firms such as Evans & Evans and most recently, Phoenix Corporate Finance. Ms. Sommerfeld has a MBA in marketing and M.Sc. in Molecular Genetics, both from the University of Toronto.
Mr. James Passin – Director
Mr. Passin joined Firebird in 1999. He co-founded and manages Firebird Global Fund, Firebird Global Fund II, Firebird Mongolia Fund, and Firebird New Mongolia Fund. Mr. Passin serves on the board of directors of several Mongolian and Canadian companies, including Sharyn Gol JSC (MSE: SHG), BDSec JSC (MSE: BDS), Khot Development JSC (MSE: SDT), Khot Infrastructure Holdings, Ltd. (CSE: KOT), and Vanoil Energy, Ltd. (TSXVX: VEL), a Canadian oil exploration company focused on Kenya and the Seychelles. Mr. Passin is a recipient of the Mining Sector 90-Year Anniversary Honorary Medal from the Mongolian government and was awarded the Honorary Medal from Khentii Aimag, Mongolia. Mr. Passin was also named “Fund Manager of the Year” at the 2012 Mines and Money Conference in Hong Kong. Mr. Passin is a graduate of St. John’s College, where he majored in philosophy and classical literature.
Mr. Bruno Maruzzo, MASc, MBA – Director
Mr. Bruno Maruzzo, has significant experience as a Director on the Board and executive management of numerous biotechnology companies. Mr, Maruzzo is currently President of TechnoVenture Inc, a technology consulting company and an independent Director of critical Outcome Technologies Inc, Hamilton Thome Ltd. and Pinetree Capital Ltd.
Mr. Serge Morrell – Director
Serge Morrell, Analyst, joined Firebird as an intern in 2010 while completing a degree from Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania and began working fulltime in 2012. At Wharton, Serge was a student in the Huntsman Program, a dual degree in International Studies and Business. Serge has previously worked at Jefferies and Credit Suisse and attended Stuyvesant High School in New York.
